Kitty Askins Hospice Center – GoldsboroHome Health and Hospice Care, a nonprofit health agency founded in 1981, built the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in 1995 to give terminally ill Wayne County residents a comfortable, positive environment in which to spend their final days. In 2007, the state of North Carolina authorized the expansion of the hospice center from 12 beds to 24 to address growing needs in the community.
With the help of a $264,000 grant from the Rural Center, the hospice was able to expand its existing facility. The project, which is expected to create 24 jobs, enabled the construction of a family gathering room, a kitchen and a brighter and more inviting chapel. The facility will be the first hospice in the state certified under the LEED environmental efficiency standards.
