Entrepreneurial Incubator Projects, 2006-07

Projects in seven rural communities received grants for 2006-07 through the Entrepreneurial Incubators program.

Bryson City
The city will be renovating a donated building for a business incubator. The incubator will include room for three retail businesses; space for light manufacturing; and a common area for receptions, meetings and training. It also will offer assistance with marketing research to businesses in Swain, Jackson, Macon, Clay, Cherokee and Graham counties. This project is partially funded by ARC.
Hyde County
The Hyde Davis Business Enterprise Center will be expanded and upgraded to serve more clients. Upgrades include work on the electrical, heating and air conditioning systems and on the communications/computer networks.
Jones County
A new incubator in the Jones County Industrial Park will include classrooms, tenant offices, production space and loading docks . It is located one block from a planned branch campus of Lenoir Community College. The incubator will serve Jones, Craven and Onslow counties.
Pender County
A shared-used commercial kitchen incubator will be renovated and equipped at the Cape Fear Community College Burgaw Center. Target clients include value-added farm producers, specialty/gourmet food producers, bakers, church groups and seasonal vendors. The incubator will serve entrepreneurs within a one-hour radius of Burgaw, including Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, Onslow, Duplin, Sampson, Bladen and Columbus counties.
Siler City
Three storefront buildings will be renovated for expansion of the N.C. Arts Incubator. The incubator provides inexpensive space, technical support and business development services to emerging artists, arts groups and arts-related businesses.
Star
A former textile mill will be renovated and equipped to serve as the STARworks Center for Creative Enterprise. Current and anticipated tenants include a ceramics supply business, an architectural terra cotta company, a glass and metal studio and a hands-on tourist pottery program. The center also will host outreach events and workshops targeting service providers and entrepreneurs. It will serve small towns in Montgomery County and the rest of the Yadkin-Pee Dee Lakes Project area.
Watauga County
The Appalachian Enterprise Center will be re-established in a location housing both entrepreneurs and their service providers, including SCORE, the Appalachian Regional Development Institute, the Small Business and Technology Development Center and Advantage West. The combination is designed to ease the ability of start-ups and growing companies to obtain a variety of forms of aid, including training, mentoring and technical assistance. This project is partially funded by ARC.
