Rural Center responds to state budget

North Carolina Rural Partners:

As most of you know, the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, Inc., will be undergoing significant changes in the coming months. The General Assembly released its FY14-15 budget yesterday, which directed state funds for rural economic development to the N.C. Department of Commerce. We fully expect this decision to be reflected in the final budget, which goes to vote on Tuesday and Wednesday and then to the desk of Governor McCrory.

What will this mean for the Rural Center and its partners? The Rural Center board of directors will meet in July and August to carefully weigh the options and determine directions for the future. We will keep you posted as more information is available.

In the meantime, the Rural Center is working closely with the Office of State Budget and Management, with the hope that funds will be released so that we can meet grant obligations to local governments and other rural partners.

As always, we deeply value the work you are doing to build a brighter future in your communities throughout the state and welcome your calls and emails.

My best,
Elaine Matthews
