In August 2000, the N.C. General Assembly established the Rural Internet Access Authority and charged it with connecting every community in North Carolina with affordable, high-speed Internet service by December 2003. At the heart of the legislation is a commitment by executive and legislative leadership to give all North Carolinians access to increased economic opportunities, higher living standards, more individual choices and wider and more meaningful participation in public life.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Rural Internet Access Authority announced today that communities in North Carolina's economically distressed counties are eligible for grants of up to $700,000 to establish innovative, multipurpose information technology centers.

The Rural Internet Access Authority was created by the General Assembly to oversee North Carolina's efforts to provide rural communities with high-speed broadband Internet service and to serve as the state's leading planning body for rural Internet policy. Directing the work of the authority is a 21-member Rural Internet Access Commission chaired by UNC-Wilmington Chancellor James Leutze. Jane Smith Patterson serves as the executive director of the authority, which is housed in the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center.
