John is the director of advocacy at the NC Rural Center, where he leads statewide grassroots engagement and state and federal government relations to advance the Rural Center’s Rural Counts strategies for rural economic development. Prior to the Rural Center, John worked in community relations and philanthropy for PNC Bank’s Eastern Carolinas Market, and in civic engagement and program development for the Institute for Emerging Issues at NC State University.
A native of Sanford, John received his bachelor’s degree from NC State University and his master’s degree from Harvard University. He lives in Raleigh and is chair of the Longleaf Collective, a young professionals giving circle of the Triangle Community Foundation. He serves on the board of ARTS NC State, the Harvard Divinity School Alumni/Alumnae Council, and the program committee for the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation. In his free time, John plays handbells at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, attends any theatre production he can find, and is on a mission to hike every state park in North Carolina.
