Gil has a passion for strengthening and growing rural churches in North Carolina. He is a part of the Thriving Rural Communities Initiative with the Duke Endowment and Duke University. He is leading a movement of United Methodist Churches that help strengthen the offering of resources to rural communities. His current appointment as Lead Pastor for Salem United Methodist Church, a rural 800 member congregation in Eastover, NC, offers resources in developing their community through childcare, dismantling racism and serving food insecure populations.
For the past eight years, he has served as the Cabinet Secretary. He was instrumental in guiding the distribution of a Duke Endowment Grant to support the restoration of churches damaged from Hurricane Matthew. He heads the COVID Grants Task Force for the distribution of over 4 Million Dollars in Financial Assistance. He has served as the Cabinet representative to New Faith Communities, Conference Hispanic/Latino Ministries, Methodist University Board of Trustees, and the Congregational Development Fund.
Rev. Wise is a graduate of Methodist College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Religion/Philosophy. In 1998 he earned his Masters of Divinity from Duke University and in 2010, he earned his Doctor of Ministry from Solid Rock School of Theology.
