Arisha Guerra Fonseca is the economic development manager for El Centro Hispano, the longest-serving Latino organization in North Carolina, and we’re pleased to feature her in our September 2024 Alumni Spotlight. El Centro’s service area includes the Triangle region and the rural counties that surround it. She graduated from the Rural Center’s Rural Economic Development Institute in 2023 and joined us to answer a few questions about her recent work and her advice for emerging leaders.
What has been the impact of REDI on your leadership journey since completing the training, both personally and professionally?
Since completing the REDI program in 2023, my leadership approach has evolved. The program equipped me with modern leadership skills and rural development strategies, which I now apply as economic development manager to promote growth and community engagement. REDI also enhanced my ability to navigate complex community challenges, and professionally, it strengthened my capacity to collaborate across sectors, including local governments, nonprofits, and small businesses.
What recent accomplishments, projects, initiatives, or points of pride would you like to share?
One of my proudest achievements is being promoted to manager of economic development at El Centro Hispano. Through REDI, I gained valuable insights and built a strong network, which I now use to lead initiatives like the Triangle Business Network, Digital Development for Small Business, and financial clinics. I also launched a mentorship program and secured funding for a business training program, fostering growth and financial stability within the Hispanic/Latinx community.
What are the greatest assets in your rural community or region?
Our rural community’s greatest asset is its residents’ strong sense of connection and resilience, especially within the Hispanic/Latinx population, which contributes diverse experiences and entrepreneurial spirit. The collaborative efforts of local organizations, businesses, and government agencies foster impactful partnerships that drive economic growth and development.
What advice would you offer to current or emerging leaders in rural areas?
My advice to emerging rural leaders is to prioritize collaboration over competition. Form partnerships across sectors and leverage your community’s strengths while seeking innovative solutions for gaps in infrastructure and resources. Continuously invest in personal growth by learning and connecting with others who share your vision for an inclusive, prosperous future.
