Infographic showing number of homes damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina according to FEMA surveys. In all counties shown, the number of damaged owned homes is greater than the number of rented homes.

Hurricane Helene has had a lasting and devastating impact on Western North Carolina. Various parts of life for those calling the mountains home were impacted due to this expansive storm. One of the most pressing and vast impacts Helene had on the region was the housing stock, destroying or damaging thousands of residences and upending the lives of thousands of North Carolina people and families.

Local and state leaders are pushing resources to the region to support housing recovery, but signals have been mixed about how recovery efforts are going. In this second report in our series on Helene recovery, we use the most recent data to investigate the status of housing recovery in the most impacted parts of Western North Carolina, and where recovery might go in the future.

This is the second report in our research series on Helene recovery. The series’ first report was on post-Helene labor force recovery and unemployment.
