Fighting for
Rural North Carolina

The Rural Center traveled the state to develop its most recent Advocacy Platform, stopping in 15 rural communities stretching from Elizabeth City to Tryon.

Those community meetings added real-life perspective to our “Rural Issues Poll,” an entirely grassroots effort to connect with rural citizens, stakeholders, and leaders on the issues facing their regions. Participants included state legislators and their staff, congressional office delegation, business owners, leaders, farmers, local elected officials, local government, local school officials, and community members.

Advocacy Impact

The Rural Center Collaborative Broadband Initiative has been a key player in bringing broadband to rural North Carolina and helping to rethink broadband plans in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. The Rural Center's team convened meetings in Hertford and in Sylva to connect internet providers with county and regional leaders. The Rural Center has also played an important role helping communities develop broadband plans and earlier this year filed more than 70 corrections to the federal government's official broadband map, assuring better coverage for rural communities.
